How to read this data
What the numbers measure and why they matter.
What it measures
Every open futures or perpetual contract, valued at the current price. It rises when traders open new positions and falls when they close them.
Why it matters
Rising open interest with rising prices means new money is using leverage. A sharp drop usually means positions are being closed or liquidated.
OI to market cap
ratio = open interest ÷ market capComparing open interest with market cap shows how leveraged the market is relative to its size.
About this page
Crypto open interest is the value of every futures and perpetual swap contract that is still open, priced at the current market. This page totals it for the largest coins and splits it two ways: by exchange, to show where leverage sits, and by coin, to show which assets traders are positioned in. The chart tracks the total, bitcoin and ether over a day, a week, a month or a year.
Rising open interest alongside a rising price usually means new leveraged money is coming in. A sharp drop points to positions being closed or liquidated, which is why this dataset is best read next to liquidations and funding rates. The open interest to market cap ratio, open interest divided by market cap, compares leverage across coins of very different size.
Figures cover seven exchanges with free public data: Binance, Bybit, OKX, Bitget, Gate, Hyperliquid and Deribit. CME has no free feed and is left out. Live readings refresh every 15 minutes. The history combines World-Crypt's own hourly records with the archives Binance, Bybit, OKX and Gate publish, so each coin's chart grows as new archive files appear.
Questions
Short answers to what people ask most.
Open interest is the value of all open futures and perpetual swap contracts at the current price. Each contract has a buyer and a seller, so it is counted once.
Bitcoin open interest is $24.23 billion across the covered exchanges. Open interest for all the largest coins together is $64.2 billion.
More contracts are being opened than closed, so more leverage is in the market. Read with the price, it shows whether new money is betting on a rise or a fall. It does not say where the price goes next.
Open interest counts the value of positions still open at one moment. Trading volume counts everything traded over a day, including positions opened and closed within it.
Seven: Binance (USDⓈ-M and COIN-M futures), Bybit, OKX, Bitget, Gate, Hyperliquid and Deribit. Bitget and Hyperliquid publish only a two-sided figure, which is halved.
CME has no free open interest feed, so its bitcoin and ether futures are not in the totals.
