About Solana
Toly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal established Solana in 2018 as a public blockchain platform that supports smart contracts. Its native cryptocurrency, SOL, pays transaction fees and is staked to help keep the network secure, according to its developers. The network went live in March 2020, launched by Solana Labs, a company based in San Francisco.
Solana combines proof-of-stake with Proof of History, a timestamping method that gives validators, the computers that confirm transactions, a shared clock. Its Gulf Stream protocol sends transactions to validators before the current block finishes, which shortens confirmation times.
