About Layer 1

Layer 1 networks are independent blockchains. Each one carries its own transactions and settles them itself, without handing them to another blockchain to process.

Every network in the group has its own validators, the computers that check transactions, and its own security. Each also has a native token, the coin used on that network. Some, such as Ethereum, support smart contracts, programs that run on the blockchain, and the decentralized applications built with them.
