Crypto regulation and how we rank in India

Buying, holding and trading crypto is legal for Indian residents, but crypto itself is unregulated: no licence regime exists, and the Government says crypto products and NFTs carry no regulatory recourse. Since March 2023 every virtual digital asset service provider (VDA SP) serving Indian users, whether onshore or offshore, must register with the Financial Intelligence Unit India (FIU-IND) as a reporting entity under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (an AML registration, not a licence); FIU-IND reported 31 registered VDA SPs on 28 December 2023 and 50 on 1 October 2025. FIU-IND issued show-cause notices to nine unregistered offshore exchanges on 28 December 2023 and asked MeitY to block their URLs, then on 1 October 2025 sent notices and app/URL takedown orders to 25 more offshore platforms; Binance, KuCoin, Bybit and Coinbase were fined or warned and have since registered. Tax: gains on VDAs are taxed at a flat 30% and a 1% TDS applies to transfers.

Each platform gets a score from 0 to 10. Access and the local licence carry the most weight; security, fees, the range of coins and products, the number of ratings of its app in the local App Store and the quality of the data make up the rest. Only official sources are used: the platforms' own terms and the regulator's public register. A dash means we could not verify a value.

These platforms exclude residents of India in their own terms, or the regulator has barred them. They are listed for reference only, without ranks or sign-up links. Using a VPN or false details to get around a restriction breaks the platform's terms and can end with a frozen account.
