Crypto regulation and how we rank in Canada

Crypto asset trading platforms serving Canadians must be registered with the provincial securities regulators that make up the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), usually as a restricted dealer or a CIRO investment dealer; the CSA publishes the list of authorized platforms, and unregistered platforms could only keep operating under a pre-registration undertaking (by 17 July 2026 only DigiFinex's remained, and Uphold withdrew its undertaking on 29 May 2025). Dealing in virtual currency is also a money services business activity that must be registered with FINTRAC. Buying, holding and trading crypto is legal for residents, but crypto is not legal tender and crypto assets are not covered by CIPF.

Each platform gets a score from 0 to 10. Access and the local licence carry the most weight; security, fees, the range of coins and products, the number of ratings of its app in the local App Store and the quality of the data make up the rest. Only official sources are used: the platforms' own terms and the regulator's public register. A dash means we could not verify a value.

Popular exchanges not available in Canada

These platforms exclude residents of Canada in their own terms, or the regulator has barred them. They are listed for reference only, without ranks or sign-up links. Using a VPN or false details to get around a restriction breaks the platform's terms and can end with a frozen account.
