How gas fees work
Why the same transaction can cost cents one hour and dollars the next.
Gas used × gas price
fee = gas used × (base fee + tip)Every action needs a fixed amount of gas. You choose the price per unit, paid in the network’s own token.
Base fee and tip
The base fee rises when blocks are full and falls when they are not, and it is burned. The tip goes to the validator and buys priority.
Layer 2s
Rollups like Base and Arbitrum batch thousands of transactions and settle them on Ethereum, which cuts the cost per transaction.
About this page
The ETH gas tracker shows what it costs to use Ethereum right now. Three tiers, low, standard and fast, give the gas price in gwei, the expected wait and the dollar cost of a transfer and a swap. A cost table prices common actions such as sending a token, a DEX swap, a bridge, buying or minting an NFT and a token approval.
Gas fees are gas used times the gas price, which is the base fee plus a tip. The base fee rises when blocks are more than half full and falls when they are not, and it is burned; the tip goes to the validator. A plain transfer uses 21,000 gas while a swap uses about 150,000, so a swap costs roughly seven times more.
The tracker also covers Base, Arbitrum and Polygon, where a transaction usually costs a fraction of the Ethereum price. Data comes from public RPC nodes and refreshes every 5 minutes. The cheapest-time chart averages gas by hour of day in UTC over the past week, and the history chart covers 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.
Questions
Short answers to what people ask most.
Standard gas is 0.8 gwei and the base fee is 0.45 gwei. The low and fast tiers, with their waits and dollar costs, sit at the top of the page.
What users pay a blockchain to process a transaction or run a smart contract. On Ethereum they are paid in ETH and priced in gwei per unit of gas.
A billionth of an ether, the unit gas prices are quoted in. All three tiers on the tracker are stated in gwei.
The cheapest-time chart averages gas by hour of day in UTC over the past 7 days. It is an average, so any single hour can run above or below it.
The base fee follows demand for block space. It rises block by block when blocks are full and falls when demand drops, so the same transaction can cost cents one hour and more the next.
