Crypto regulation and how we rank in Australia
Any business that exchanges virtual assets for money or other virtual assets, holds them in custody or transfers them for customers must be registered with AUSTRAC as a virtual asset service provider before offering those services (crypto exchanges have been regulated by AUSTRAC since 2018), and AUSTRAC made its VASP register public on 30 June 2026. The Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Act 2026, assented on 8 April 2026, will also require digital asset platform and tokenised custody platform operators to hold an ASIC Australian financial services licence; that part commences on 8 April 2027, with a 6-month transition for operators that apply in time. Crypto derivatives already need an AFS licence, and buying and trading crypto is legal for residents.
Each platform gets a score from 0 to 10. Access and the local licence carry the most weight; security, fees, the range of coins and products, the number of ratings of its app in the local App Store and the quality of the data make up the rest. Only official sources are used: the platforms' own terms and the regulator's public register. A dash means we could not verify a value.

Popular exchanges not available in Australia
These platforms exclude residents of Australia in their own terms, or the regulator has barred them. They are listed for reference only, without ranks or sign-up links. Using a VPN or false details to get around a restriction breaks the platform's terms and can end with a frozen account.
