How the network works, what it is used for and its main tokens.
Solana is a public blockchain platform that supports smart contracts and uses proof-of-stake consensus to agree on the ledger. It is a layer 1 network built to handle a high number of transactions quickly and cheaply, and it hosts order books that run on chain, where buy and sell orders are matched.
Solana combines proof of stake with a timestamping method called Proof of History, which serves as a decentralized clock. Its Sealevel engine executes smart contracts that do not conflict with each other simultaneously on several CPU cores, and the Gulf Stream protocol sends transactions to validators ahead of the completion of the current block, which shortens confirmation times. SOL is the native token, used to pay transaction fees and staked to secure the network.
