About Cosmos
Cosmos is a network of many independent blockchains, called zones. The Cosmos Hub is a distributed ledger holding multiple assets that links the zones so they can work with each other through one shared hub, and ATOM is its native token, which holders use to vote on governance proposals.
ATOM holders bond their tokens to earn block rewards, and according to the developers the amount staked sets the economic security of the Cosmos Hub. ATOM also pays the fees that prevent spam, with the fee based on the computation a transaction needs, similar to Ethereum gas.

The zones run on Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus protocols such as Tendermint, and they use Proof-of-Stake instead of Proof-of-Work.
Anyone can connect a blockchain system to the Cosmos Hub by starting a new zone, and tokens then move between zones directly with no middleman.
