What are the main risks of holding Curve DAO?

CRV is the token of Curve DAO, and holding it brings pool exploits, stablecoin depegs, dilution by votes and unclear US rules. Nothing insures it.

Short answer

CRV is the token of Curve DAO, the community behind the Curve Finance exchange. The main risks are a flaw in the pool code, a stablecoin losing its peg, votes that dilute holders, and unsettled US rules.

An automated market maker is an exchange where traders swap against coins held in shared pools. Curve Finance is one, and its pools mostly pair tokens built to track the same value, like stablecoins. Michael Egorov built it, and CRV arrived with Curve DAO in 2020.

What are the main risks?

Holding CRV carries four risks: a bug in the pool code, a stablecoin that breaks its peg, a vote that dilutes you, and unsettled US rules. No bank deposit insurance covers it, so a loss falls on you.

What can go wrong in pools?

A Curve pool holds each coin in a ratio that supply and demand set, so a break in that ratio hits depositors first. A flaw in the code or a stablecoin losing its peg can break it.

  • In July 2023, attackers used a flaw in the Vyper compiler to drain several Curve pools.
  • A stablecoin that loses its peg tilts the pool, so depositors end up holding more of the weaker coin.
  • Exploits or depegs shake confidence, and CRV demand falls with it.

Who controls CRV emissions?

Locking CRV gives you veCRV, a voting balance that grows with the size and length of the lock. Those votes decide which pools receive new CRV. A large holder, or a group voting together, can direct emissions to its favored pools.

Holding CRV compared with locking it as veCRV
CRV holder veCRV locker
No voting power Votes on emissions
Nothing locked Tokens locked for a set period
Faces dilution from votes Can dilute other holders

Is CRV regulated in the US?

US regulators have not said clearly whether CRV is a security or a commodity. Under the Commodity Exchange Act, the CFTC counts virtual currencies as commodities, but not CRV by name. Cases against other tokens keep the question open.

Frequently asked questions

Locking CRV gives you veCRV, a voting balance that grows with the size and length of the lock. Those votes shape where new CRV goes.

Holding it pays you nothing. Curve says liquidity providers earn swap fees and CRV rewards.

A hack drains the coins in one pool, not the tokens in your wallet. It can still weaken demand for CRV.

A group with enough voting power could send new CRV to pools it favors, which dilutes other holders.
