TRC-20 vs ERC-20: which USDT network should you use

Which USDT network you use depends on your wallet and exchange. TRC-20 runs on Tron and pays fees in TRX; ERC-20 runs on Ethereum and pays in ETH.

Key takeaways
  • TRC-20 often appears in exchange deposit menus.
  • ERC-20 is the version Ethereum apps handle.
  • Tether says each token is backed one-to-one by reserves.
  • Critics question how verifiable those reserves are.

Short answer

TRC-20 and ERC-20 USDT are the same Tether token issued on two different blockchains, and each version uses its own address format and its own coin for fees. Which one you use depends on your wallet or exchange, and both ends of a transfer must be set to the same network.

USDT is issued on more than one blockchain, and the name in front of the token tells you which one you have. Each version follows the rules of its own chain, and those rules decide the address and the fee coin involved in every transfer.

TRC-20 vs ERC-20 at a glance

TRC-20 is the fungible token standard on the Tron blockchain, and ERC-20 is the token standard on Ethereum. Tether issues USDT on both. Which network works for a transfer depends on the wallet or exchange you send from and the one you send to, and the two ends must be set to the same network.

Both ends must support TRC-20 ERC-20

Where is each USDT network accepted

Tether added a TRC-20 version of USDT on Tron in 2020, and the ERC-20 version lives on Ethereum. Exchange deposit screens commonly list TRC-20, while Ethereum apps handle ERC-20. Not every service accepts both, so the receiving side decides which one you can send.

What happens on the wrong network

If you send TRC-20 USDT to an address that handles only ERC-20, or the reverse, the receiving wallet or exchange may not credit the transfer. Tokens sent to a smart contract not built to handle them can be lost for good. If the receiving service controls the address, it can sometimes return the funds, but recovery is not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Tether issues the same stablecoin on both networks, and each version aims to hold the same value against the US dollar.

No. A TRC-20 transfer reaches only addresses that handle Tron tokens, and an ERC-20 wallet expects a token on Ethereum.

It varies by exchange and can change. Open the exchange's deposit or withdrawal page and read the network name listed next to USDT.

Contact the receiving service's support team with the transaction hash and the network you used. If it controls the address, it may be able to help, but it does not have to.
