The technology was introduced in June
Mastercard presented Agent Pay for Machines on 10 June 2026. The system is designed for AI agents that buy data, computing power or other digital services within a budget and permissions set by a business.

The 20 October announcement is the start of early developer access, not the first description of the technology. Mastercard is providing APIs for buyer agents and service providers, along with a toolkit, sandbox and documentation.
The demonstration bought one report and eight images
At Cloudflare Connect, the marketing agency Hype gave an AI agent a budget for a sample protein-bar campaign. The agent bought one social-media research service from AIsa and eight campaign images through Cloudflare AI Gateway.
The result was nine payments to two independent service providers within one approved budget. The agent paid only for the services used and did not need a separate account, API key or invoice for every provider.
x402 carries the payment request
The pilot used x402, an open protocol incubated by Coinbase. When payment is needed, a service sends an HTTP 402 Payment Required response. The agent then creates a digitally signed voucher within its approved spending limit.
The voucher is a commitment to pay, not proof that settlement has already finished. The service provider verifies it before delivering the service, and several vouchers can be combined and redeemed later.
Roles in the pilot
- Mastercard: APIs for buyer agents and service providers, toolkit and payment framework
- Cloudflare: Cloudflare AI Gateway and demonstration environment
- Coinbase Developer Platform: Wallet infrastructure
- Base: Onchain settlement network
- BVNK: AI agent wallet and fiat or stablecoin settlement
- x402: Protocol for requesting and verifying web payments
Coinbase, Base and BVNK handled different parts of the pilot
Coinbase Developer Platform supplied wallet infrastructure, while Base acted as the blockchain network for settlement. BVNK operated the AI agent’s wallet and connected fiat and stablecoin settlement through Mastercard’s Global Money Platform.
The product is not a new token and does not require every service provider to hold a stablecoin. It connects an automated buyer with providers that may use different settlement routes.

Early access remains a testing stage
Mastercard has released tools for selected developers, not a finished retail service. Security, identity, spending permissions and error handling still need to be tested in more situations.
The Cloudflare demonstration provides a specific example: one research purchase, eight image purchases, two service providers and one fixed budget. Wider use will depend on whether developers can repeat the process without giving an agent unlimited access to funds.
