About Bitcoin
How the network works, what it is used for and its main tokens.
Bitcoin is a layer 1 blockchain and the first decentralized cryptocurrency, created in 2008 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, with its mainnet launched in January 2009. It lets people send electronic cash to each other with no bank or government in the middle, and it is designed for secure, censorship-resistant payments rather than general computation.
It works through a peer-to-peer network of computers, each keeping a copy of the blockchain without central oversight. Cryptography checks transactions so no one can spend bitcoin that belongs to someone else, and nodes agree on the chain's contents by mining, a proof-of-work process that needs heavy computation and uses the SHA-256 algorithm. BTC is the native coin, used to pay transaction fees and carry value on the network.
