How the network works, what it is used for and its main tokens.
Arbitrum is an Ethereum scaling solution that makes transactions cheaper while feeling very similar to Ethereum. It is a Layer 2 network, running on top of Ethereum, built as an optimistic rollup: it processes transactions away from Ethereum's main chain. Its mainnet launched in August 2021.
The Nitro stack runs Ethereum Virtual Machine code off-chain, and transaction data is posted back to Ethereum. ARB is the network's native token and the token holders vote with in the Arbitrum DAO, which funds ecosystem incentives. Among the network's eight largest apps by deposits, counted in 2026, are DEX trading, derivatives trading, lending and prediction market platforms.
