About Ethereum
Programmer Vitalik Buterin came up with the idea for Ethereum in 2013, and it is a decentralized blockchain platform whose smart contracts, programs that run on the network, let anyone deploy applications that anyone else can use. Ether (ETH) is its native cryptocurrency, used to pay the fees charged for transactions and for running smart contracts.
People use Ethereum to create fungible tokens, which are interchangeable with one another, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are each unique. The platform runs on Proof of Stake, a way of agreeing on the state of the network in which validators lock up ETH to propose and validate blocks.
