Short answer

You verify a transaction on the Bitcoin Lightning Network by matching the invoice's payment hash to the payment preimage in your wallet. You need the wallet that handled the payment and its transaction details.

The Bitcoin Lightning Network is a separate payment feature that works with Bitcoin. When you verify a transaction on the Bitcoin Lightning Network, you are not checking a normal blockchain record.

What Counts as Verification?

A Lightning payment is verified when the payment hash in the invoice matches the payment preimage. The hash is a string in the invoice, and the preimage is the secret value that produces it. When they match, the recipient can claim the funds.

A Lightning payment has no on-chain transaction ID for a block explorer. The Bitcoin blockchain records normal Bitcoin transactions, while Lightning payments settle separately.

How to Verify a Payment

Open the transaction details in your Lightning wallet. Menus differ by wallet and app version, so look for Details, Info, or Advanced. You will check the payment hash, the preimage, and the payment status.

  1. 1Open the payment detailsTap the payment to see its hash and often the preimage.
  2. 2Copy the payment hashThe hash comes from the invoice and is your main reference.
  3. 3Compare hash and preimageAsk the recipient to hash the preimage if your wallet cannot. The result should match.
  4. 4Check status and askYour wallet marks it in-flight, succeeded, or failed. If it lacks a preimage, ask the recipient to confirm settlement.

What Should I Do After Verifying?

After you verify, keep the invoice, payment hash, preimage, and amount. The IRS treats cryptocurrency as property, so a payment you make with bitcoin can be a taxable event. If you received a payment, you may need to report it as income.

Keep for your records

  • Save the invoice text or image.
  • Record the payment hash.
  • Record the preimage if shown.
  • Note the amount and date.
  • Store the status screen.

Frequently asked questions

A Lightning payment has no on-chain transaction ID. It settles off the Bitcoin blockchain, so a block explorer has no entry to show.

A payment preimage is the secret value that unlocks a Lightning invoice. Hashing it produces the payment hash, so a match proves settlement.

An in-flight or failed label can be wrong if the payment reached the recipient. Ask the recipient to check their wallet for settlement.

A success label is strong evidence that the payment settled, because the preimage matches the hash. Ask the recipient to confirm they can spend the funds.
