Ethereum developers postpone Hoodi activation and separate the gas-limit change

Ethereum developers have postponed the Glamsterdam activation on the Hoodi testnet. The old October 26 time is no longer valid, and no replacement date has been announced. The change to a 200 million gas limit has been removed from that same activation plan, not abandoned permanently.

A contract interaction needs more testing

ChainSecurity published an analysis on October 13 describing a possible interaction between EIP-8038 and existing failure-handling logic. Under some conditions, a failed call could leave enough gas for a failure handler to execute unexpectedly. In other cases, a previously valid operation could fail because the gas accounting changed.

The concern does not mean that Ethereum mainnet has already been affected. Developers delayed Hoodi so the behaviour can be tested before the same changes move further through the release process.

Sepolia activated earlier, but Hoodi now needs a new schedule

Glamsterdam activated successfully on the Sepolia testnet on October 6. Hoodi had been configured for epoch 132352, slot 4235264, at 17:42:48 UTC on October 26. Those numbers are now historical and must not be treated as the current schedule.

The wider Glamsterdam package includes enshrined proposer-builder separation and block access lists. Those features continue to be developed. The delay gives client and application teams more time to test their interaction instead of locking in a date before the open issue is resolved.

Node operators should follow releases from each client team

Updated releases include Lodestar 1.50.1, Besu 26.10.1, the Ethrex 30.0.1-rc.2 prerelease and Nethermind 2.2.1. Releases come from the individual client teams; they should not be described as software issued by the Ethereum Foundation.

Operators using Grandine, Lighthouse, Nimbus, Prysm, Teku, Erigon, Geth or Reth should wait for confirmation from the relevant project. Mainnet users do not need to move funds or change wallets. The practical task belongs to Hoodi node operators and developers testing the upgrade.
