Zcash activates NU7 and cuts its target block time to 25 seconds

Zcash has activated the NU7 network upgrade on mainnet. The update reduces the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, retires the original Sprout privacy pool and starts a broader programme aimed at improving performance and future resistance to quantum attacks.

Shorter blocks change the speed of confirmation

A 25-second target gives the network three times as many blocks in the same period. Users should see transactions included sooner, although the exact confirmation time still depends on network conditions, wallet behaviour and the number of confirmations a service requires.

Node operators and wallet providers prepared for the change in October. A network upgrade only works smoothly when the main software used by exchanges, miners and users is ready before the activation height.

NU7 also closes an old part of the protocol

The Sprout pool dated back to Zcash’s launch in 2016. Retiring it removes a legacy component that no longer matches the network’s current privacy design, but it also leaves coins that were never migrated out of that pool unspendable.

The upgrade also introduces the Network Sustainability Mechanism. Its purpose is to collect certain fees and unclaimed rewards under defined rules rather than changing the fixed maximum supply.

Quantum-resistance target Production-ready work targeted for 2027

Quantum resistance is a separate, longer project

The NU7 activation block was mined at 02:34 UTC on 6 November, while Shielded Labs has created a dedicated cryptography group called Epoch. The group is working towards a production-ready approach to future quantum-computing risks by the end of 2027.

That timetable matters because the current upgrade does not make every part of Zcash quantum-resistant today. NU7 improves speed and simplifies the active protocol; the cryptographic migration will require additional design, testing and another carefully coordinated deployment.

Wallets and services still have operational work to do

A successful activation does not mean every user-facing service changes at the same moment. Exchanges may keep their own confirmation rules, and wallet providers can release support on different schedules. Users should rely on the status page of the service they actually use rather than assume that shorter blocks automatically produce an identical deposit time everywhere.

Node operators need compatible software because consensus changes cannot be ignored by an older client. Monitoring peers, block production and resource use after activation is as important as installing the release before the upgrade height.

For ordinary holders, the main distinction is between the active Orchard and Sapling systems and the retired Sprout pool. The upgrade is designed to simplify the live network, but funds left in the oldest pool are affected differently from coins already moved to supported addresses. Clear wallet warnings are therefore part of a safe transition.
