About Uniswap
Key facts, ownership and custody.
Uniswap is a decentralized exchange for spot trading, started in 2018. It is a protocol for exchanging cryptocurrencies without a central party, and it uses smart contracts to trade digital assets automatically, so no middlemen or central order books are needed.
Trades settle against on-chain liquidity pools that users supply, and Uniswap uses those pools to let people swap tokens. Users keep custody of their own funds, and every balance is visible on-chain. It runs on open-source software. As of 2026, it runs on more than 40 chains, among them Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum, and pool fee tiers are set per pool from 0.01% to 1.00%, which liquidity providers earn.
