The earnings report changed the market’s focus
The fall followed Alphabet’s third-quarter results. Revenue continued to grow, but the pace of expansion in the search and advertising business was weaker than investors expected.

Google Search and related revenue increased by about 12% from a year earlier. That was slower than the growth reported in the previous quarter and raised questions about competition from AI search products.
Spending was the second concern. Alphabet purchased more than $51 billion of property and equipment during the quarter as it expanded data centres, chips and other infrastructure for artificial intelligence. The investment placed heavy pressure on free cash flow.
The decline is a warning, not proof that the AI boom is over
The market reaction shows that investors now want clearer returns from large AI budgets. Strong demand for cloud computing is no longer enough if infrastructure costs rise faster than cash generation.
However, one sharp fall does not prove that an AI bubble has burst. Alphabet remains profitable, Google Cloud continues to expand and the company still has several ways to earn money from its AI products. The main uncertainty is how quickly those products can cover the cost of new infrastructure.
Technology losses can affect crypto risk appetite
Alphabet’s decline also weighed on the wider US technology market. The Nasdaq fell, while other companies with large AI spending programmes came under pressure. Bitcoin moved toward $77,000 during the broader risk-off session after trading above $86,000 earlier in October.
The moves happened at the same time, but they should not be treated as proof that Alphabet caused Bitcoin’s decline. Crypto prices were also reacting to their own security and liquidity concerns. The connection is investor appetite: when traders reduce exposure to expensive technology shares, high-volatility digital assets can face additional selling.
Investors will watch cash flow and search advertising
The next reports will show whether Alphabet can restore faster search growth while keeping AI spending under control. Markets will focus on capital expenditure, free cash flow, cloud margins and evidence that new AI services are producing durable revenue.
Until those figures improve, the record sell-off will remain an important test for the wider AI trade rather than a final verdict on the technology.
