Crypto travel rule: what it requires
The crypto travel rule requires exchanges to share sender and recipient details on transfers. US providers follow FinCEN rules, which can add checks.

When you move crypto between providers, both sides usually need to know who is involved. The rule can explain why an exchange asks for extra details before it releases your funds.
What does the travel rule require?
The travel rule requires covered crypto businesses to share sender and recipient details on a transfer. In the US, FinCEN's travel rule under the Bank Secrecy Act applies to exchanges and money transmitters.
What information must providers send?
For each covered transfer, the sending provider collects information about you and the recipient. It then passes names and account numbers to the receiving provider, and some transfers also include an address.
How do private wallet transfers work?
Sending to a private wallet is not automatically prohibited. The rule still applies when a covered provider sends virtual currency to a private wallet. The provider may ask you to verify that you own or control the wallet.
Where does the travel rule stop?
Compliance varies by country and provider, so a transfer that is routine in one place may face delays or blocks in another. The US rule comes from FinCEN, while other countries have their own versions.
The travel rule is not the same as KYC. KYC is the identity check a provider runs when you open an account. The travel rule shares data with the receiving provider.
Frequently asked questions
The sending provider may still collect the information, but it may delay or block the transfer.
States generally do not have a separate travel rule. They license money transmitters and can require recordkeeping, so state rules may add checks.
The sending and receiving providers see it, and they may share it with regulators or law enforcement when required.
No. The rule applies to covered transfers of virtual currency, but providers can treat different assets and transfers differently. Not every transfer is covered.
